Bass Music Mix 10 - Tomb Crew

Monday, 11.31am.  Re-state my assumptions.

Bass Music Mix 10 comes crashing to Earth with a POW, courtesy of upstarts Tomb Crew.  Tomb Crew have been making massive noises this year - just look at their gig list.  They'll probably be coming through yo' town any time soon so get down and see the flat (brimmed) cap extravaganza in all its glory!  They started out playing a lot of grime, so we asked them to put together a mix of classic grime tracks.  Plastician, Jon E Cash, Ruff Sqwad, they're all here - if you missed out the first time then get to know.  Serious stuff.

Wicked mix, thanks!  Do you still play much grime out these days?

We play far less than we used to. I think the scene slowed a lot with many nights being shut down or ending with trouble, so consequently the ‘raving’ tunes slowed down. Although Next Hype by Temps has blown up all over again! Tomb Crew came together through grime so we’ll always have a soft spot for it.

If so, how does it go down?  Do people recognise the old stuff?

Some Alias and old Sticky tracks still get loads of love when we play them. It’s always nice to mix in some of the old with the new to really spice up the sets.

It's great to hear some classics again - i'm all about 'Cha'.  It can feel like some people missed out on how new and interesting grime could be back then, but it's getting more recognition now - do you agree?  Maybe people were put off by the aggro and the 'scene' and didn't notice how good the tunes were?

That’s a tough one! I think nostalgia in everything can get the better of us. The earlier days of grime were so exciting for us, something completely fresh and new, so yeah I’ll always believe that older stuff was more interesting and that the kids that didn’t get into it back then are missing out. Aggro in music has never stopped music from being popular, but I think people were put off by the fact that the aggro was so close to home, and was a pretty uninviting scene to begin with. Nights like Dirty Canvas have gone a long way to prove that you can have nights without beef, so we can all feel a bit more in touch with the scene.

So anyway, what have you guys been up to lately?

We’re still playing loads, more now in Europe than ever before which is great. Apart from that we’ve been really hard at work making producers of ourselves. It’s something that we’ve just begun to take a lot more seriously.

I loved Western Jam, it's massive! - got any more cheeky edits coming up?

There’s always a cheeky edit around the corner, but we’ve learned to be a lot more cautious with them now. You never know who you might rub up the wrong way!

You lot look pretty busy, gig-wise.  How does that work?  Do you all do all the shows?

Yeah we try as much as possible to all be there for all of the shows. It’s really difficult but we have the philosophy that you don’t get a Tomb Crew show if all of us aren’t there. I’d say 95% of the time you’ll get all of us. There’s a lot of organisation involved, and a lot of driving.

How did you get started?  It kind of feels like you just popped up this year, fully formed and already smacking it...

We started about 2 years ago (there were a few more of us back then) so I guess you could say we’ve come into 2009 already on our feet running. A group of us moved to London from Nottingham with the intent of just DJing as much as we could together. We’ve been lucky enough to get to a line up of three guys that share a complete motivation and passion for what we do.

...and what's in the pipeline?  Any projects you want to plug on our fair blog?

Yeah we’ve got loads coming up! As well as playing all over the place, we’ve just finished remixes for Crookers which will be coming out very very soon. We have a Drop The Lime remix finished for our good friends Trouble and Bass, and a classic grime remix finished for the Dirty Canvas label No Hats No Hoods. Expect all these in the next few months!
