The 22nd (Deuce-Deuce, baby!) in our series of exclusive mixes comes from Cardiff's Monky, a man who is making some really interesting music and steadily cropping up on a lot of people's radar. We sat him down for an interview, then made him stand back up and do us a mix...

Bass Music Mix 22 - Monky by bassmusic
Yo Mr Monky! Can you introduce yourself to our readers - where are you from, what do you do and all that?

Hello, my name is Joel, I'm from Cardiff in the UK, and I produce music and DJ, amongst other things.

Biggups for the mix - really good stuff! How would you describe what you play and what you want to do with your sets?

Thanks, no probs! I'd say that I try to keep my sets fast moving and varied, and I try to play stuff that compliments my style of production and what inspires me. There's a lot of music that I like but I wouldn't necessarily play out because it doesnt fit with my sound so well, I never play anything that I'm not really feeling, and I'm not really one of those DJs who plays music they ain't feeling just to get people dancing. Although i do want to make people dance and enjoy themselves :)

Similarly, there's a lot of your own productions in there - how would you describe your sound?

Psychedelic Synth Rock and 8 Bit Ravestep are ways it has been described, either is good.

A tune that really grew on me is Cygnus X1 - and I've heard Jamie Vex'd aka Kuedo play it out as well. Any more plans for stuff in that vein?

Yep, I'm gonna try to make more like that. Big up Jamie Vex'd for playing that 1 too, yo!

What artists are doing it for you at the moment? And what do you mostly listen to, just for pleasure? What are your main influences, and all that...

There's so much music I like, especially new stuff at the moment. Samiyam, Harmonics 313, Actress, Mount Kimbie, James Blake, B Bravo, Dam Funk, thats all stuff that i've been listening to a lot of lately. I also listen to a lot of reggae (old and new), Hendrix, Thelonius Monk, MF Doom, I've been bumping Bone, Thugs and Harmony on my tape deck in my car now for a good few months! I get inspired by the people and the scene around me, I also get a lot of inspiration from people like James Lovelock and Jacques Fresco, who aren't musicians, but have a real wisdom and the ability to look at things differently. And also books and films and graphic novels and all that malarkey too.

What do you have coming up - releases, gigs, porn films, lecture tours etc.?

I've got my new EP on Robox NeoTech about to hit the shops around the 16th August, the single of which "Drunkerdz" is already out. There's likely to be more releases coming out on Robox Neotech. I'm currently on the look out for other labels to release some of my newer bits. I've got a gig coming up at the Viral Radio night in Amsterdam at the Trouw Club on 1st October. That's organised by Juha and Cinnaman, those guys have really been repping my stuff so I gotta big them up, yo! And that's going to be with Stagga and Don Leisure as well. I'm not in any porn films yet I don't think, but who knows what the future has in store. If the Ron Jeremy look comes back in fashion I may be in for a shot :)

Why no 'e' in Monky - are you in fact telling us that you are bit like a Monk, a bit Monky, rather than somewhat simian i.e. a Monkey?

Well, my nickname has been Monkey from long back because I'm covered head to toe in fur!But I decided to drop the 'e' so that people can find me easier on the internet, nothing too exciting. Although some people do say that I'm kind of monklike so it works on that level too.

Is the Kaptin actually a Captain, or is he in fact a horny man-goat, raised only on rave milk?

Hahaha!!! I'm sure he must be the Captain of something, I'm not sure what though. He's definitely a horny goat man, I don't know what kind of milk he was raised on, probably just man milk! Hahaha (jokes). Sorry, ye got to big up Kaptin every time, he's a monster in the game!!!!!!

Any shout outs / mentions, or anything we forgot?

Yes, big up all my universal brothers and sisters, rispek! if anyone would like to book me please contact marcus@littlebig.org.uk and thank you very much to BassMusicBlog for getting me on, hope you like the mix. Pz!
