Black Rio

No particular rhyme or reason to this post, it's not that topical or anything.  Anyway, back in the late 70s in Rio there was this great scene which has come to be known as 'Black Rio'.  While in the US (specifically New York) the likes of Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria were taking latin rhythms and working them into the prevailing soul and jazz sounds, in Rio the opposite was happening - local musicians were taking influences from US funk and soul, and bringing them together with the samba and tropicalia sounds that were abound at the time.  The result was this awesome funky latin sound, which lay undiscovered by many of us western types until the Strut compilation of 2002.  Recently, DJ Cliffy has compiled a sequel, Black Rio 2, and it's well up there on my shopping list.  He also did this promo mix for it, which will have to suffice until I can stump up the 17 quid to get it on vinyl (don't know why, but I don't want this on mp3).  Check it out here - brilliant summer listening:

I'm also going to link up this video of a track from the first comp, which is one of my favourite tracks in any style, any era.  Incidentally I'll be playing a set of stuff like this at the Prince Of Wales in Bristol (the Gloucester Road pub, not the St Paul's one) this Sunday - so if you fancy it, you can stop in and buy me some booze.
