Exclusive! Bass Music Mix 5 - DJ Absurd
Dj Absurd, the Paris Bassline Don and original wideboy of les banlieues, blessed us with the next installment of the Bass Music Mix series, stepping into the shoes of Subeena, Martsman, Julio Bashmore and Akkachar. Basically, if you like the crossover points between Ragga, Speed Garage, Funky and Dubstep, you need to check the mix!
I caught up with him for a quick chat...
Binga: Easy DJ Absurd! I first heard of you when Dub-4 linked me with your Mavado 'Gangster 4 Life' Niche re-rub, which i still play. How did you get into music, and Niche in particular?
Absurd: Ez Sam! I got into music quite young - I remember when i was 12 I liked to know all the new records coming each week in many different styles which had no particular links: I was a fiend for Dancehall & Hip Hop as much as Heavy Metal, Hardcore Punk or 60's soul.
I got into Bassline because i fell in love with UK Garage back in the Dreem Teem / DJ Luck & MC Neat days; I kept on following what was going on in the scene through to today. I loved when Grime & Dubstep came out, but Bassline 4x4 took me back to some even more garagey sounds that I loved - cos I remember rinsin' some oldschool 4x4 beats like Soulo & Steve Feelgood's 'True' or DnD's remix of Elephant Man for years, so when i heard the new 4x4 tunes i loved that sound straight away!
Binga: When I played with you in Paris, you were pretty much focussing on Niche / bassline sounds, whereas this mix is much wider in scope. Where does your main musical interest lie?
Absurd: Well, I know its always a bit corny to quote people in interviews but I have to quote Frank Zappa to answer this: " I only see two types of music: the one i like, and the rest" . This is exactly how i see things music wise.
With this mix, I started with uk funky bashment sped up to the max (master-tempo'd up rather than straight pitched up, to avoid the chipmunk vocals!) and then I headed into bassline ragga, then to dubstep, so I've tried to cover as many different aspects of Bass Music that appeal to me as possible.
Binga: Is there much of a scene for Niche and Funky in Paris?
Absurd: Not at all to be honest, but it's more because people dont know about it than anything else. I usually have good reactions from the crowd when I play, it's just that people here arent too curious about music generally I guess.
Binga: Any plans to visit the UK soon? I know you and Virus have linked in the past...
Absurd: Yes bro, I try to go to the UK as much as possible, because i have bare friends there now even outside of music, and of course I have to keep up-to-date with the sounds...
