Introduce yourself - who are you and what do you do?

Firstly, I am an extrovert and music lover... closely followed by DJ / Producer. My passion for electronic music started in my early teens, picking up jungle mix tapes, listening to old skool, hardcore and early ninja tune releases. About the same time I became an advocate of experimental dance, like Aphex, Squarepusher, Amon Tobin etc. and helped to organize a few raves and festivals along the way.

After school I went to study a music tech. course, but dropped out for personal reasons. A few years later, after reflecting on what really motivates me, feeling more spiritually and mentally grounded, I decided, with a little help from my friends, to start a local event pushing new sounds 'Dub SoulJah's' , and re-enrol at college. The events have always been set up to network local producers and get people interested in new music, rather than profit making. Artists such as Vista, Sigha, Quantum Soul, wAgAwAgA, Fused Forces, Kryptik : Elementz, Turbulence 303 and technically...Mala, have all passed through and shed some light on what they do.

In the mean time, I have harnessed my analytical and creative writing skills to get involved with music, events and artist reviews, for magazines and labels. The one of which I am most proud to be a part of is the BIG UP Magazine. Watching its development over the last year as a cutting edge contemporary art & music publication has been really interesting.

What's the idea behind the mix?

I have set out for it to be eclectic, getting the more abrasive tunes out the way in the first 15 minutes and sinking into deeper, soulful tracks as it progresses. Track selection and progression is important to me every time I step up to the decks. In my opinion its important to experiment with the sounds, and try and support the guys breaking through as much as the established names. The idea behind the mix? To showcase some great new productions.

Plenty of dubs in there, any favourites?

There's a few - firstly, Banana Sandwich because of its progression and the fact we achieved exactly what we set out to when writing it, a deep dubstep roller. Then the Cymatic track, Dub for Peace is a collaboration between Ruckspin and Quantum Soul from Ranking Records, it catches a vibe and has a solid groove. Smokah's track is so soulful and really does it for me, he's a very talented producer who I think you'll be hearing more from.

We also managed to get a free tune out him...

quot;>What's the story with the free tune?

Well, I've been working closely with a friend, G3, to develop our production styles. Feeling as though we are reaching a turning point in establishing 'a sound', we thought it prudent to get a track out there. The production and mix down are quality and the track will rip up a sound system... Everything you could want from a freebie ;)

What are your influences?

I would consider Jazz, Funk and World music as the bedrock for my influences. They are the backbone and substance of the tracks that most inspire me. In this respect I fully endorse WOMAD as one of the best Summer festivals for the diversity of sounds you will absorb in just a few days. Current producers doing it for me are Samiyam, Flying Lotus and the whole buzz going on around Low End Theory in L.A. - plus Blasta, Anti Social Entertainment and wAgAwAgA.

How do you see bass music developing?

Although the principles remain the same, Music is constantly evolving and re-inventing itself. When producers marry modern hardware (Virus, Waldorf synths) with analogue technology (Tape Saturation & Echo boxes) they get some excellent results, but affording the equipment is another matter. With the development of technology such as Ableton Live, taking your sound to the dancefloor and the ability to “Mash it Up” has never been easier; when played with real instruments, the possibilities are endless.

Future plans and goals?

In terms of music, write and play as much as possible. I am beginning to shy away from the decks more these days in favour of getting on the buttons. 2010 is about developing production techniques and getting a selection of good tracks under the belt.

Biggups!
