MUTEK 2011 - a brief intro.
June 1

MUTEK, Canada's premier electronic music and "digital arts" festival/general chin-stroker muso paradise is once again upon us. Being the by-default-local-correspondent (otherwise seen on this blog here, listenables here) I'm going to walk you quickly through some of the more interesting events.
Metro Arts is a new event where local (i.e. Canadian) producers play inside the Berri-UQAM Metro station (i.e. our "tube") during rush hour. Today's will feature Montreal's Bowly, heard quite a bit on Rinse.Fm and Nasty.Fm and released on Berkane Sol not long ago. Thursday and Friday will see The Gulf Stream and techno mainstay Mateo Murphy play for the unsuspecting crowds.
A/Visions is a series of events that, in their words, feature "artists who explore the essential relationship between image and sound". They're seated events that generally feature experimental electronic music and video artists working together. Bristol locals will note Emptyset playing the opening event today.
Experience is the free outdoor event in the tiny park by MUTEK HQ. Friday will feature Bowly, Toronto's Knowing Looks and myself, playing as Hissy Fit. Thursday also looks worthwhile, with local techno heavies Meek, Xavier Lebuis and Sinteg taking the stage.
Nocturne is where MUTEK really puts on its dancing shoes. Pretty much every one is a winner, but the most impressive is probably Nocturne 3 on Friday, with Plastikman, XI, Skinnybones and Deepchord presents Echospace.
Finally, MUTEK @ Piknic is the heart and soul of the festival, an outdoor event that draws thousands. Saturday will see Floating Points and Terry Lee Brown Jr while the lineup Sunday, to be announced the day of, should prove to be even better, if past experience is anything to go by.
