Concrete Island EP

December 5

Concrete-1

New release on bass music oriented label Chateau Bruyant from France. This new EP gather 4 french producers for 4 tracks.
The highlight on this one is for me the first tune by Youthman & Redeyes call Bitch & Gunz, which is a mix of house, ghetto tech or future garage call it how you want but it works good and bang hard in a club trust me ! Those 2 guys has been producing music for years now and had releases on several labels like Metalheadz, Bingo or even Gilles Peterson's imprint Brownswood.
The rest of the EP is strong too with tunes by Eatdust, X_j and Mael cruising from dark dubstep to weird future beats.
It's out now on you can get it digitally basically everywhere !

Bass Music Mix 29 - Chrissy Murderbot

September 12

Leech_20110516_34133

This week, we've got a new mix for our bass music mix series from the man like Chrissy Murderbot from Chicago.  2011 has been pretty busy for him, touring & promoting juke all over US and Europe with DJ Rashad and also releasing his album, "Women's Studies" on Planet Mu.  Murderbot has been in the game for years now, I was a fan of his ragga jungle productions on Mashit back in 2005 and he's also known for having made a mixtape a week on his blog during 2009 and 2010.  Chrissy was kind enough to take some time in his mad schedule to answer few questions and deliver a massive bumbooclaat mix!!

So, please introduce yourself - who are you and what do you do?

I am Chrissy Murderbot. I am a DJ/Producer living in Chicago, making and playing lots of different kinds of fun, forward-thinking party music.

What's the deal with this mix?  Is it the kind of set you'd play in a club?

This mix is definitely the type of set I would play in a club, albeit shortened a little. I like to start out with something slower and build up to faster / more energetic types of music. I get really bored by DJs who just play one tempo for their entire set...

So what have you been up to lately? The past few months seem to have been very busy for you...

Been INSANELY busy. Lots of remix work, lots of mixtapes, still promoting my album Women's Studies on Planet Mu, about to drop my new EP, I'm A Asshole, on my own Loose Squares imprint, as well as releasing new EPs from DJ Lil'Tal (on Loose Squares) and James Braun (on Loose Squares's sister label, Sleazetone). Also about to head on tour with Machinedrum, followed by a West Coast tour with EPROM in October and a solo European tour in December.

You run the label Loose Squares - can you tell us about it?  What's the thinking behind it?

There's two labels--Loose Squares and Sleazetone. Loose Squares is an outlet for fun, uptempo booty music. Sleazetone is more on the deep-house-meets-bass-music tip. I suppose the uniting thread in both of them is that they are tunes I feel really strongly about, and that kind of connect the dots between UK dance music culture and Midwestern house, ghetto house, juke, techno, etc.

You're putting out this new EP of remixes of a juke/footwork classic, “Pop Yo Back” from DJ Lil'Tal. Can you tell us more about it?

That's the next Loose Squares release. It's this CLASSIC juke/footwork tune here in Chicago called "Pop Yo Back"...one of those trax that is absolutely legendary around here but has never had a real proper release. We've got some awesome remixes from Squire of Gothos, Star Eyes (from Trouble & Bass), Sonido Rampage y Nader (from Ghetto Division and T&A), Mister Ries, and Kaptain Cadillac. Very diverse takes on this track...I'm really excited about it!

Speaking about juke, what came first, juke the dance, or juke the music? Can the two be understood separately? Will we see dancefloors globally adopting their own kind of juke dancing?

Well this is a big misunderstanding--a lot of people confuse juke and footwork. When you talk about "juke" the dance, that's basically just freak dancing, or fuck dancing, or grinding, or whatever you wanna call it. Anybody can juke. It's just instinctual and everybody is born with that ability. Footwork is different--that's the really crazy stuff you see in youtube videos from footwork battles and stuff like that. And in terms of the music, Juke music is just a faster, more modern version of Ghetto House. Footwork is the stuff that evolved from juke specifically for the footworkers--the tracks with the really sideways rhythms, halftime claps, etc. Footwork dancing has been around since before footwork music really existed as a thing, but they both kind of evolve together and inform how the other will develop.

What is the actual difference between juke and jit, and do Chicagoans hate jit?

There is no hate. Chicago has a lot of love for Detroit and vice versa--so many great musicians in both places. As for jit, it is another really footwork-oriented dance, but it comes from Detroit. The dances are very similar, and they evolved from the same kind of dances that came up from the South with all the African-American immigrants to Chicago and Detroit in the 1910s and 1920s. They really are very similar in concept, there's just a lot of moves that are different and stylistic kinda stuff like that. I'm not a footworker so I'm the wrong guy to ask. As far as the music goes, footwork dancers dance to footwork music, and jit goes with ghettotech. Ghettotech is a lot more four-on-the-floor, more high-energy I guess, and has a lot more of that Detroit flavor. You will never see a Detroit dude jitting to some track with halftime claps and a completely off-the-wall rhythm like in footwork music, but in Chicago that's the type of stuff the dancers prefer. They'll get pissed if you give 'em 15 minutes of four-on-the-floor kick drums. Again, neither of these scenes are really my thing...I'm more about dance parties and people on the dancefloor having fun than I am about competitive dance battle stuff.

Which artists are you really feeling at the moment?

Machinedrum, Jumping Back Slash, Cardopusher, Pacheko, Walton, Juketastrafe, DJ Lil'Tal, James Braun, Submerse, Seiji, MC ZULU, Atki2, Hanuman, Baobinga, DJ Nehpets, Big Dope P, Trustus, Eprom, Famous Eno, Africa Hitech, Om Unit, Murlo, Slick Shoota, Aquadrop, Kush Arora, Akira Kitechi, Trim, TRC, DOK, Julio Bashmore, Funkystepz, TWR72.

Any others things you want to add, biggups etc ?

If you like this, go buy my music!

Bass Music Mix 12 - Bombaman

December 14

Photo

For this installation of our ongoing Bass Music Blog featurette, we've got Canadian Mike David, aka Bombaman, in the mix. He's been actively grinding out tracks from his home studio and getting noticed internationally. With his unique style, this Toronto resident has seduced some big artists like Crookers, Rusko, and Diplo to name a few. And why shouldn't he? He's got a load of tracks and remixes on labels like Lo Dubs, Electrostimulation, Aufect, ESP, and Dim Mak.  He has a slew of upcoming remixes of artists ranging from DZ, to Manchester's Numan, to Nonewyork, and Thunderheist.  Currently he has one of his own tracks scheduled for imminent release titled: "One of Everything" on Aufect records.  It's no wonder his name is indelibly marked on the tips of people's tongues when discussing this new wave of bass music coming from North America.

Sidenote: You used to go by Matt Carl. Why the name change? Why Bombaman?

Bombaman: I have always kind of used the two names, interchangeably, but the more I got into production, the more I started using JUST Bombaman. That, and I hate trying to explain the whole Matt Carl thing.

S: So why Bombaman?

B: I spent A LOT of time playing that video game, Bomberman, especially when XI and myself lived together. We'd work on tunes, one guy on the production computer, the other guy on the super nintendo computer. I think, at the time Magnetic Man had just come about, it was kind of a goof on that...

S: Hah, you ever sample the game? Bomb blasts, dying sounds, etc?

B: Nah, though I have gone on a mad hunt to find a sample in the game that says "Bomberman" to use in a track, but to no avail...

S: You and XI are basically like the dynamic duo (not sayin' either of you are the sidekick), but how did you two meet? What happened to your collaborative project as Loetech?

B: We met many moons ago, through a mutual friend when we were both heavy into DnB. Around the same time, we both started getting out of dnb and started making really weird, experimental kinda stuff, mostly getting our feet wet in ableton. That would have been about 3 or 4 years ago. Since then, we've been attached at the asshole, doing radio shows together, making tunes, playing live and what have you. What happened to loetech? Well, we both started doing different things. He went and did deeper stuff, and I kept playing harder, noisier stuff. NOW we are on separate sides of the pond for sure.  He does hip hoppy things, I do housey things. Every now and then we come together to merge the two styles, but not too often these days. We're both pretty busy with our individual stuff, remixes and the like.

S: You say "housey", but I'm sure there's a million sub-genres we could categorize the sound you're making now. In your own words tho, what would you call the stuff you produce?

B: Ahh fuckkkkk, I have no idea. It's 140 bpm. Sort of dubsteppy, but sort of housey. I don't want to call it housestep, cuz that sounds retarded. I'd say it's just some heavy bass shit, you know?

S: These days, I think calling music "whatever"-step sounds stupid. Whats the most ridiculous pairing with "step" you've heard recently?

B: BROstep, FACK OFFFFFFFFFFFF. God almighty, stupidest thing I have ever heard. Who cares how hard the music is? It's still dubstep.

S: Ok, I was trying to think up a question concerning brostep, but I think thats a whole can of worms (an expression I don't think I've ever used before) I don't want to get into.

I.D. : The North American scene in general seems to be really popping at the minute with artists like you, XI, Starkey, DJG, Jus Wan, Noah D, DZ and so on. So yeah, how'd that all happen and what do you reckon will happen next?

B: How did it all happen? Shit, the internet, that's how. Seriously, I don't really know. The internet has played an ENORMOUS role in getting mine and XI's name out there, that's for sure. Without it, we'd still be trying to mail out cd's, waiting forever for responses. These days it's instant, which, in my opinion, is awesome for quality control. What's going to happen next? No idea, really, but it seems North America is 100% holding it's own. With the artists mentioned, as well as guys like 12th Planet and Joe Nice championing the sound like mad all over the world, playing a lot of North American stuff, I think it's all just gonna be "dubstep"...region won't matter. Guys like Skream and Plastician are loving up the North Americans atm, so i think the ball is already rolling.

S: The mix you've done for us is all your own tracks. This doesn't give me any idea to the other artists you're into at the moment. Any specific tracks you can't stop listening to? Any mixes that keep popping into your playlist?

B: At the moment, I listen to this mix Crookers did live in Paris from September, I think it is. SOOO many good tunes in that mix. Been listening to a lot of Laidback Lukes radio show on Club FG or whatever it's called. I try and grab whatever Rinse podcasts they make available, like Skream's and the Dub Police show. They are the guys playing the kind of dubstep I am into. As far as tracks are concerned, 12th Planet is at the top of my playlist next to DZ and XI. And again, Crookers material always makes it in to my live sets. My tunes are heavily influenced by what others are doing. I like specific things about certain tunes, and just kind of jack the ideas and make it my own. This usually spawns from me knowing I will never get the tune(s) so I just have a go at it on my own.

S:  ok, also, before we wrap this up, there this never ending thread on TJ.com (torontojungle.com), "An Interview with Mike D (NSFW est 1841)".  Do you think linking that thread would be a good supplement to this interview?

B: HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! ummmmmmmmmmm, maybe, lol, it's a pretty good representation of what me and xi are all about, that's for sure :D [XI interviewing Bombaman - NSFW]

Exclusive! Bass Music Mix 7 - J:Kenzo (Soul Shakerz, Argon, Dub Police)

September 28

Kenzo-headphone

I hooked up with Jay Kenzo recently and asked him if he would make something for our Bass Music Mix Series.
The man was up for it and got the mix few days ago in my mailbox so here you go !!

1- So first thanks you for doing this mix for us ! For people who dont know you yet What kind of vibes can we expect in a J:Kenzo set ?

Anything goes really, i love playing deep dubwise riddims aswell the more uptempo dancefloor tracks. Depends on what crowd i am playing to, on a typical set i like to fuse the two together. I believe a dj's set should be about progression... knowing the right time to build the crowd up and bring them back down again.

2- Discovered you through your excellent release on Argon called Mortal Kombat which was pretty deep, then recently you sent me that kind of soca dubstep tune called Hoods up I've been playing a lot (charted on the blog in august), you also did a remix for roska, are you going more in a uk funky soca tropical way right now ?    Or you still making different kind of tunes ?

Different kinda tunes, depends on what i'm feeling at the time when i'm in the studio.
The Roska remix was really enjoyable to build, and i'm glad its been accepted across the board from the dubstep heads to the funky crew, I think there is still a great deal of space for producers to experiment in dubstep, that was the whole reason i loved the sound from the beginning.

3 - You're playing at the dub police night @ Fabric in October, pretty excited I guess ? Doest that means you have some stuff forthcoming on the label ?

I'm really looking forward to it! It will be my first booking for dub police and fabric and it falls right on fabrics 10th year anniversary. Tune wise, fingers crossed there will be something out on dub police in the near future. I played Caspa some of my productions which he has signed, but it is all under wraps at the moment.

4- Finally, what's in the pipeline?  forthcoming tunes, remixes ?

The next project i'm involved in that will be released is from a german producer some of you may of heard of called Twisted, which is forthcoming on my own label 'Soul Shakerz'. The track is called 'Robots' and feature's a remix from myself and a remix from Roska. The track is due out late October so make sure you check it.
I'm soon to have another 12" ready for Argon Records and i am currently working on an album for release sometime in 2010.

J:Kenzo - Exclusive Mix for Bassmusicblog.com

01. Twisted - Changes
02. Von D - Berlin  Call
03. DJ Heny G - Hardo Bread
04. J:Kenzo - Constant (crack dub mix)
05. J:Kenzo - Mortal Kombat
06. J:Kenzo - Tekno Bass
07. J:Kenzo - Hoods Up
08. Roska - Holograph (J:Kenzo Remix)
09. Twisted - Robots (J:Kenzo Remix)
10. J:Kenzo presents Konnek Deep - Karizma

Enjoy !
