James Fox / Chart for June:
Novalima / Yo Voy (Seiji Remix) / CDRSeiji has always been one of the classiest slingers of broken beats in the business - see his killer unreleased remix of Erykah Badu 'Honey' - and this is predictably no exception. It's basically what breakbeat music could have been if electro house had never happened - raw, simple and booming music for soundsystems.
James Fox / Put It Back (Ramadanman Refix) / TakeAs much as self-promotion makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable, I would be lying if i said this wasn't another jaw-droppingly ace production from the quite offensively talented Mr D. Kennedy. Futuristic 2 step sub bass pressure that pretty much turns into a Boards of Canada record halfway through - obviously. Out soon (ish).
Instra:mental / Futurist / Naked LunchHaving heard some of this crew's dnb output in recent months, I wasn't surprised to discover that they can also do the business at lower bpms as well - this one rolls out at a leisurely 135 in a flurry of dry, snapping snare rolls and queasy droning synths. Great pads too, for those of you who like that sort of thing
Skinnz / Ukraine / CDRMore dubstep leverage from Binga's alter ego - this one eschews the almost tribal percussive roll of the recent Tectonic release in favour of steel plated technoid energy and some most satisfying bass wobulation.
Jason Fine / Puttin' It Out (A Made Up Sound Remix) / Kontra MusikI think if there was one producer that i could do a vulcan mind-meld on, it would probably be Dave '2562' Huismans. He has the knack of making deep space techno and 2 step seem like the most obvious combination in the world, not least on this remix where he blends echoing, shimmering synths with a masterclass in low end pressure.
Ursula 1000 / iLove (Baobinga + ID Remix) / CDRI wasn't sure what to make of this at first, it really doesn't sound quite like anything I've heard before. It's basically an extremely chunky drum workout, and the bit in the middle where it all fades out and the huge synth pad & vocal comes in makes me feel like i've just done a double balloon a bit too quickly. This is a good thing
Fever Ray / When I Grow Up (Scuba's High Up Remix) / UniversalIt's already been shown that the woman from the Knife (and now Fever Ray) has a voice well suited to dance music - see the enormous 'What Else Is There' remixes from a couple of years back - so I had high hopes indeed for this. Thankfully I was not let down - there aren't that many people who can do big room records with quite so much class as this. I like the water noises as well.
Julio Bashmore/ Around / CDRTop notch unsigned bizzle here from the exotically-named Bristolian - somewhere between UK Funky and straight up house with a big squashy kick drum. I wasn't too sure about the vocal at first, but you just know it will work over the summer months. Great bassline as well.
Tony Lionni / Found A Place / OstgutThis is without question the most fantastically gay record that i own, and that is meant as a massive compliment. In summary: thudding house drums. A piano riff loops over and over and over. Some chopped up disco vocals come in and strike a pose. A different piano riff makes an appearance, builds, drops. Record ends. Mega simple, but oh so effective.
Dark Knight / Broken Beats / Urban RidimsAs the name might suggest, this is pretty much a breakbeat record - not one that any breakbeat DJ i know of would actually play, but never mind. Top class slinky early doors tackle, I'll even let him off for using that awful GM saxophone sound...
