Blog Charts - May

May 25

(pic link)

It was pointed out to me that the beach picture I used yesterday was of Cleethorpes pier; possibly the first picture of Cleethorpes ever to be featured in this blog.  So, as our little weekend heatwave passes, here's another pic of that much-mocked northern English seaside town.

Anyway, on to the matter at hand, which is a rundown of some of the biggest tunes around at the minute.  As ever, check out these blogs for more of their expertise and impeccable taste:

Sonic Router:  It's impossible to ignore the work of James Blake; we've had our metaphorical phallus wedged deep into his burgeoning back catalogue for months now, since he confirmed our fears with his remix of Untold's 'Stop What You're Doing' in fact. Working alongside the duo Mount Kimbie - he's the third member of their live show - he's blowing up BBC Radio 1 playlists as much as he is the underground dances with this one; the eponymous track from his 'CMYK' EP forthcoming on R&S:

Chromekids:  Stagga - That's When I Jacked It:  Stagga is off deejaying round the far corners of the earth but will be joining us for a full Chrome Kids set on the Friday night at Shangri La in Glastonbury Festival.  He's also hard at work on his album, on which you may well catch this tune:

Baltimore Club:  Doo Dew Kidz ft Mullyman – Step Aside: The track is a bit old now, but the video was released this month and its on MTV - so good to see Baltimore Club going global.  [...is that a cameo from Snoop off The Wire?]

Everyday Junglist:  Sub - Tensions [Subtle Audio]:  Without doubt one of the most innovative & forward thinking labels in d&b, Subtle Audio had been a bit quiet in recent times but they are rising like a phoenix with a load of great music at the moment, and this is the pick of the bunch. Twisting, glitchy d&b underpinned by a slightly eeerie atmosphere and ambience, its good to see labels and producers doing something different and pushing boundaries. Whilst on the Subtle Audio tip I've got to give the Polska LP, '2nd Rate', a plug too as it came out at the same time. Its excellent, go forth and purchase post haste.

Going Other Places:  John Talabot - Sunshine (Blondes Remix) [Hivern Discs]:  This month I'm switching things up a bit. After some intense months of harsh winter and pumping house beats, summer has arrived. Time to act accordingly. So, as a slight return to one of last year's great gems, the track that rocks my world right now is the mojito-flavoured, sunset (and sunrise!)-accompanying, cosmic disco-embracing Blondes remake of John Talabot's Sunshine.

Bass Music Charts - April

April 12

1475951265123880

Old Eastern European train stations in the snow.  Yes.  Let's have some charts.

James Fox: Hackman & Sleverance - You & Me (dub) - awesome synth heavy broken beat thing with a supremely infectious vocal, one for the summer I reckon.

Terry Hooligan:  Tomb Crew - Inna Dat (Rico Tubbs & Will Power remix) - Rico & Will take the original from a Bmore bounce to a dance floor smash...

Rico Tubbs:  12th Planet & Juakali - Reasons (Doctor P Remix) - I've been feeling lot of the new "clownstep dubstep" lately , this being a prime example - almost identical to Sweetshop which means mayhem on the dancefloor.  (*this track was released for free on the Scion label sampler vol 30, Smog.  Don't bother with the useless and impenetrable Scion website, grab it from here)

I.D.:  Ikonika - Idiot (Altered Natives remix) - Loving the broken house roll on this one, and that bleepy 8-bit riff really gives it an old rave atmosphere.  Big.

Baobinga: Bit of a prick move, but my tune 'Wine Up' with Manchester's finest Killa Benz has been doing it, so much so that Steak House, the label it's coming out on, have decreed that it shall be the A1 of the EP from whence it cometh. Check it on my myspace.  A tune not by me that has been working super well would probably be the Rustie Resmak of Keesha - grab it from his myspace - or Calibre 'Steptoe'. Which should ideally be bought on wax from an independent record shop.

Ginz:  Hate to blow our own whistle, but Bao and my new "The Body Snatchers" track entitled "I Respect that Ho" has been a suprise hit in all of my club sing-jay sets.  Whilst it's probably as much to do with the interplay between my vocal stylings and Sam's skill on both the 1 and the 2 as it is to do with the song itself, there is an undeniable sense of slow viral healing of gender conflicts that have plagued the 20th and 21st centuries in all the nightclubs we've performed in.

HeavyFeet: Gonna have to pull a sorta Binga/Ginz manoeuvre here and plug our first Stamp! Beats (new label) release too. Sorry, sorry, we know, enough of the trumpet blowing etc... HOWEVER, we're rather set on the AC Slater remix of 'I Spy...' this month, so go check that bad boy out at the Port, where the Beats reside. BTW, cop the original here for free on this 'ere blog if you missed it.

Bass Music Charts - November

November 12

Media_httpsoundofsciencefileswordpresscom200904mushroomclownps3jpg_crbeptjocjbfxbd

Big ups to all Dubloaded crew last night - me and Skinnz warmed up for L.D who dropped dubplate set full of warm, tribally goodness,  and Noah D all the way from the US who mashed it up propah.  So the fact that it was Dubloaded means it's the middle of the month, but hey - here's our (slightly depleted) chart for November.  Everyone must be on holiday or something.  Still, some people have written essays so that should keep you reading for a bit...

HeavyFeet:  Falty DL - 'Party'.  Not something we'd play out usually but definitely something worthy of listening to lots at home, and therefore definitely worthy of a chart placing.

Terry Hooligan: Apathy ft. B Real & Celph Titled - Shoot First  Despite the fact its produced by Mike Shinoda from pop/rock/emo/rap strokers Linkin Park, this is massive. Sounding like a lost track from Cypress Hills first album, it reminds me of golden era hip hop. Which is why its my tune of the month.

James Fox: Jose James - 'Black Magic' (Joy Orbison's recreation) [Brownswood]  Great vocal on this, you wouldn't think it would work but it does. Oodles of bass and the drums are great too. Lovely.

I.D: Bibio - Dwrcan (Eskmo Remix) [Warp] Eskmo has totally nailed his sound over the last 12 months, into this slow, epic, loping psych stuff and this track is one of his best yet.  You wouldn't have thought something this slow could be so uplifting.

Baobinga: Taz BuckfasterHalf Man Half Trout [Rwina]  OK so we have a bit of a soft spot for Rwina here at BMB, but it's hard not to when they release stuff like this! A great mix of tuff dubstep with Rustie / HudMo / Joker style lazer synth-melodies, and great to layer with me and I.D.'s Tongue Riddim - as you can hear on this mix.  Grab the vinyl, with great artwork from Andy Crazy Legs, from the link above.

Also, I have to mention Untold - Stop What You're Doing, which is probably the tune of the year but greater minds than I have written better things about it than this. So marvel at its minimal-maximalism and study its Wileyan heritage
here.

DUB-4: DJ MADD - Detroit Skank (Forthcoming BOKA) : This tune is faya ! Play it all the time for months now, finally coming out soon on Boka Records. It's a perfect mix between dub & techno vibes, another big one from my budapest favorite producer who was doing a guest mix for skream stella session last week ! For the french camp & those who be around dont miss his first french appearance @ Spread Out - Cool & Deadly night on the 20th of november in Paris !!!

Ginz: My favourite record at the moment is "Loose Boot Drippin Sauce" by Bismark North Dakota's "The Sisters of the Slow Jam". One of the few R&B records to come out of the Dakatos in recent years, this tune is a thinly veiled series of innuendoes simultaneously celebrating and warning youth of the dangers of Gonnoreah. Here is a sampling of the lyrics:

Loose Boot Drippin Sauce
Let me hear ya CLAP CLAP
Two feet with no socks
Let hear ya CLAP CLAP
on long rainy day walks
I wanna hear ya CLAP CLAP
Got me Burning like chicken pox
I think I gotta CLAP CLAP

Though the group broke up in early 2009 after a lukewarm reception to thier debut album "When it Hurts I think of You" , the lead singer of the group, Chrissy Cooz  (Far right in this press shot) has gone on to launch a somewhat successful solo career with her euro-dance single "If Theres a Cure (You Ain't Trying Hard Enough)" which is currently 26th in the Dutch dance charts.

Bass Music Charts - October

October 7

Tq_000186_g

It's October, so here is a picture of a fjord.  It's also chart time- check out a few of these bad boys:

James Fox: Lighter - 'Skanker' [dub]   There's a lot of percussion based tunes out at the moment, but this one is a cut above, it's mega simple, has a lot of bottom end and is great to mix with.

TRG:  A Made Up Sound - 'Wire' [Archive]   So slinky and gangsta.  Is gangsta techno a genre?

Baobinga: Jameson & Viper - 'Selecta (Urban Hero)' [Sound Proof]  Going way back... It's got Jameson's standard drums and Jameson's standard bass, but luckily both of those things are utterly amazing, and this tune showcases them superbly. Wobbly but not wobble, if you know what I mean.

Ginz:  Ginz - 'Jah Shine the Light of Zion Everyday Upon the Darkness of Babylon' [Tectonic]   Have to big myself up here with this track I can only describe as a slice of nu-gospel-reggae meets dub-techno-wonky. It feels real good. Real real good.

Mumdance: Neckle Camp, Slew Dem & Roll Deep - 'Strangle Man'    Aggy as fook mate!

Rico Tubbs:  Night Crawlers - 'Push The Feelin On' (The Funk Out Palm Trees remix)   Stadium fidget anyone?  Only heard about Funk Out 2 weeks ago when I found his mad bass-heavy remix of Jackamo from Beatport.  He just sent me a bunch of borderline insane bootlegs, of which this will surely be in my box for the next 6 months.

Dub-4:  Baobinga - 'Ride it' [Forthcoming Build]  I play this one in all my sets since Bao gave it to me in April, dropped it last weekend and people went mad once again!  Watch out for the Untold remix - I havent heard it yet, but both should drop on that new label called Build in a few months' time!

I.D.: E Major - 'Paper Running' (DJ Booman remix) Have had this in the bag for a while, always liked it, but I dropped it last week - instant gyal wine-a-thon.  The Baltimore sound can be patchy at times but when it all comes together it's unbeatable.

Sidenote: Brackles - Rawkus (Planet Mu)   I was fighting some sort of cold or bronchitis (i have yet to find out, checking the clinic today) and felt like a pile of shit so I took some buckleys, smoked a large joint, drank a Jameson, and was a bit delusional. Then this baby pops on the playlist and makes being high on sickness that much better.

Bass Music Charts - September

September 9

Tundra_ice_mounds_alaska_dds21

It's September!  Already!  The summer didn't happen (again), and once more it's time for us to pick out our least worst tunes of the month.  Listen to them while looking at this picture of endless tundra.  You'll thank me for it later.

James FoxSubeena ft. Om'mas Keith & Jamie Woon 'Solidify' [Planet Mu]  Flawlessly produced electronic soul music from erstwhile BMB guest mix provider Subeena here, and a great counterpoint to all the bleepy stuff Planet Mu have been putting out as well.

BaobingaJoker - Tron - Epic swang destructulation. Wurple pow, I think they call it.

High RankinTom Waits - Step Right Up  ''The large print giveth and the small print taketh away''

Atomic Hooligan:  More Fire Crew - Oi - Before Vice magazine sent middle class clueless white writers to Bow in East London to get their Nokia's & Air Max nicked and then write about it in a superior, looking down their nose, but vaguely funny way. Bizzle was going hard, doing dirt and working his tits off to be the media icon he is now .... UNDERSTAND.

Mumdance:  J Sweet - Kerb -  When I was getting my Nokia & Air Max's Nicked in Bow, this was the soundtrack :-) O.G HEAD TOP RE-ARRANGER

SidenoteMe&John feat. Lisa Lobsinger - Tell Me // This is something that was hashed up after Flying Lotus came through Toronto and left everyone inspired. Its in 3/4, so its a bit hard to mix, but easy to waltz to. Also, Lisa Lobsinger has nice hair, which really comes through in the vocal.  DL it first here on bassmusicblog before its signed and they take down the link.

Ginz:  Rick Ross - Maybach Music 2 - This has been out for a while, but its the best piece of music ever written. Fuck Mozart. Fuck Pink Floyd. And particularly Fuck Baobinga. J.U.S.T.I.C.E League beat just too hot.

Dub-4
: Zed Bias - Neighbourhood 09 (Roska Remix) - Just love that remix, dropped it all the time this summer, pure faya !! I feel good good good !

I.D.: DJ Madd - Wot 2 Play - Wicked running breakstepper from this Hungarian DJ.  It's not on his myspace yet but it should be!  Look out for it...

Rico Tubbs chart

June 21

Pastedgraphic

I just figured out an easy way of doing these letterbox type pics on my computer.  Pretty cool, huh.  Now you're gonna get my entire collection of holiday snaps, one strip at a time.  That one there's my mum and sister in Tenerife.

Anyway, just a short post, but main man Rico Tubbs has just dropped a new chart over at Juno - go have a shufty.  Pick of the bunch for me is probably the B-Rich remix, which is one of the only fidget tunes I play these days - I don't think that clip really does it justice, as the breakdown always goes over a treat.

After you've finished that, why not get stuck into a spot of slander on Twitter?  You know it makes sense.

Records I am all over like a flannel.

June 16

Hydrants_small

James Fox / Chart for June:

Novalima / Yo Voy (Seiji Remix) / CDR
Seiji has always been one of the classiest slingers of broken beats in the business - see his killer unreleased remix of Erykah Badu 'Honey' - and this is predictably no exception. It's basically what breakbeat music could have been if electro house had never happened - raw, simple and booming music for soundsystems.

James Fox / Put It Back (Ramadanman Refix) / Take
As much as self-promotion makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable, I would be lying if i said this wasn't another jaw-droppingly ace production from the quite offensively talented Mr D. Kennedy. Futuristic 2 step sub bass pressure that pretty much turns into a Boards of Canada record halfway through - obviously. Out soon (ish).

Instra:mental / Futurist / Naked Lunch
Having heard some of this crew's dnb output in recent months, I wasn't surprised to discover that they can also do the business at lower bpms as well - this one rolls out at a leisurely 135 in a flurry of dry, snapping snare rolls and queasy droning synths. Great pads too, for those of you who like that sort of thing

Skinnz / Ukraine / CDR
More dubstep leverage from Binga's alter ego - this one eschews the almost tribal percussive roll of the recent Tectonic release in favour of steel plated technoid energy and some most satisfying bass wobulation.

Jason Fine / Puttin' It Out (A Made Up Sound Remix) / Kontra Musik
I think if there was one producer that i could do a vulcan mind-meld on, it would probably be Dave '2562' Huismans. He has the knack of making deep space techno and 2 step seem like the most obvious combination in the world, not least on this remix where he blends echoing, shimmering synths with a masterclass in low end pressure.

Ursula 1000 / iLove (Baobinga + ID Remix) / CDR
I wasn't sure what to make of this at first, it really doesn't sound quite like anything I've heard before. It's basically an extremely chunky drum workout, and the bit in the middle where it all fades out and the huge synth pad & vocal comes in makes me feel like i've just done a double balloon a bit too quickly. This is a good thing

Fever Ray / When I Grow Up (Scuba's High Up Remix) / Universal
It's already been shown that the woman from the Knife (and now Fever Ray) has a voice well suited to dance music - see the enormous 'What Else Is There' remixes from a couple of years back - so I had high hopes indeed for this. Thankfully I was not let down - there aren't that many people who can do big room records with quite so much class as this. I like the water noises as well.

Julio Bashmore/ Around / CDR
Top notch unsigned bizzle here from the exotically-named Bristolian - somewhere between UK Funky and straight up house with a big squashy kick drum. I wasn't too sure about the vocal at first, but you just know it will work over the summer months. Great bassline as well.

Tony Lionni / Found A Place / Ostgut
This is without question the most fantastically gay record that i own, and that is meant as a massive compliment. In summary: thudding house drums. A piano riff loops over and over and over. Some chopped up disco vocals come in and strike a pose. A different piano riff makes an appearance, builds, drops. Record ends. Mega simple, but oh so effective.

Dark Knight / Broken Beats / Urban Ridims
As the name might suggest, this is pretty much a breakbeat record - not one that any breakbeat DJ i know of would actually play, but never mind. Top class slinky early doors tackle, I'll even let him off for using that awful GM saxophone sound...

the bass music chart; June

June 9

Dog-in-spitfire

right then, here's the first Bass Music chart, and to celebrate there's a picture of a dog in a spitfire.  One tune each, just whatever's doing it.

Atomic Hooligan:  Tomb Crew - Bigger Than "Been starting my sets with it for a while, and it sets the mood just right when the bassline hits.

Baobinga:  Redlight - Kid Soldier.  "Mad brilliance from the man like Clipz. Kind of like what breaks could sound like, if it wasn't obsessed with using the same really dull snare drum in every tune, and was made by people that don't consider dubstep to be a dangerous and confusing aberration."

Dub4: LionDub feat. JahDan & SottoBless - HeartBroken (Noah D Rmx) "Been battering that tune for months in all my sets, it's coming out very soon on Earwax, grab it, huuuge sub!"

HeavyFeet: Kid Sister - I'll House You "Real smart re-work of the Jungle Bros classic, brought bang up to date in an East Coast sorta way by Treasure Fingers and Kid Sis. Pure hotness."

High Rankin: 'Cliffhanga - I Love It'    "This record is absolutely fucking sick. Anyone who says otherwise is either a mong or a woman.  Cliffhanga is only about 12 as well which makes him a right little cunt for having suck immense skills."

I.D.:  Rico Tubbs - Born To Bounce (Mikix The Cat remix) "Heads down gutter-house, full of old skool samples and a savage B'more style kick".

Mumdance:  Ramadanman - Revenue (Untold Mix) This is a crazy tribal garage stomp with juddering subs.  Awesome stuff.  The original is pure class too.

Reso:  Debruit - Soles Sweat (Reso Rmx) Reso on the self-promotion tip here!  He takes things down a notch with smoky pads, reverbed vocals and clipped beats.  Not yer average wobbler.

Rico Tubbs: Bill Bailey & Wongo - Cannock Wobble (Bill Eff Rmx) "Silliest bassline in a long while = made of win"

TRG:  Zed Bias - Neighbourhood 09 Club Mix "Goes off in a club no matter where or what time it's played. It's also funny watching people who think they know the lyrics and try to lip-sync (myself included)."
