Gone are the days when a Hip Hop artist's value is based on what record label he is signed too. And with the UK scene in a massive state of transition right now, it seems that any artist that gives their signature to a label, Major or Indie is kissing good bye to their credibility and artistic freedom. I see rapper's with great potential being snapped up, homogenised then dropped and forgotten. I think a lot of the problem stems from lack of respect for the beats. If I have to listen to another pop beat masquerading "Urban" i will go listen to accapella folk.
With all this said though, there is a slew of artists out there that are doing for self. This is nothing now of course, but with the "Hood Video", Download links, and less emphasis being placed on being signed, true artistic values shine through. One such case of this is Dead Man Walkn.
I became aware of this guy a few months back through his association Genesis Elijah (I have been working with gen for about 3 years now). I heard the E.P. Dead Man did with Robyn AKA Stanza, and liked what i heard. Then a a little while after i heard "The E.P." By Ruthless. While Dean Man only produced two of the for beats on this set. They were 2 of my favourite hip hop beats of the year.
Dead Man Walkn has a sound that harks back to the golden age, but is very much rooted in the now. It very melodic and extremely well executed.
The Archive Amnesty EP, is a collection of beats that Dead Man has never used up to this point. I personally think its some of his best work.
