Bass Music Mix 14 - Altered Natives

January 5

L_ef96223be3894b67a195273d3267

Very pleased to introduce the next Bass Music Mix, today coming from Altered Natives.  Altered Natives is in fact one person, Danny, and he was responible for one of the stand out tracks of the year, Rass Out - a chunky, looping, percussive roller that blurred the boundaries between house and broken beat, and has found its way onto several compilations since - notably Martyn's Fabric CD, due out this month.  Check the youtube below.  He's also got stuff coming up on Eye4Eye, who you can pick up (along with several other labels) on their ithinkmusic store.  If you don't use ithinkmusic, try to do so - pretty much all the money goes to the artists and labels, as opposed to the likes of itunes and Beatport!

So, please introduce yourself.  Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Danny Native, and I produce under the name Altered Natives. I was, is, are, am more known for my wanted/unwanted contribution to the Broken Beat scene, but I produce various genres other than Broken - House (all styles), Dubstep, Hip Hop, whatever I feel to make.

How did you get to this point?  What were you doing before Altered Natives?

Well before music, I was an artist. I just exchanged one creative expression for another.  I started out doing a Hip Hop project with one of my best friends, as I also loved writing - you never know, I might pick up the mic again one day.   I started to take more interest there, then I decided I wanted to be more independent in the studio instead of relying on people to help me put ideas together; and done a diploma in sound engineering & technology.

Really enjoying this mix - can you tell us about this forthcoming label?

Eye4Eye has been around for a couple of years, its a solely digital label, I am considering CD releases too possibly this year.
I'm looking at releases every 2 months with the odd surprise one too.

Sounds like the old 'broken beat' sound is making a bit of a tougher, rawer comeback.  Would you agree?  What artists are you checking for at the minute?

Well the sounds evolved, I've been pushing the tougher end for years.  Now I'm noticing elements popping up in current genres, and a lot of newer younger producers unrelated or recognized in the Broken scene embracing it and being tagged for it.

It pleases me that what I'm trying to do, is appealing to audiences who are not necessarily familiar with my sound.  And in doing so I'm tying certain productions to certain scenes.

Artists I'm checking for, thats long!  Funksta from Birmingham, he's making some seriously hard beats coming from a techno background, he also has a remix on one of the first releases.  At-One is one to watch on the House scene, I reckon he'll be a future dark horse over the next 2 years.  Thought Cosmic is a next generation Broken producer, he is making fresh beats.  Funk Butcher is pulling some neat tricks, D Malice, R1Ryders...

What other projects have you got on the go - anything you want to plug?

I'm working on a few collabs this year, I'm not jinxing it by saying with who though.

Where can we see/hear you DJ any time soon?

Well you can catch me every Thursday 8-10pm (gmt) www.vulive.co.uk for The Altered Natives Radio Show, which is where i air out a lot of my production across the board plus bits from the mansdem too.  I'm not holding residency anywhere, but you can catch me playing out if you keep your eyes peeled and ears open.

Anything else you'd like to say?

just thank you to everyone that has been supporting my sound.

Smutlee - Interview & Fabric Mix

October 13

Fabricliveoct16th450x550

So the Fabric Birthday weekend draws ever closer, and the amount of cool stuff hitting the net to hype the whole shebang gets ever larger.

London's finest 'named-after-a-cartoon-dog-with-a-wheezy-laugh' dancehall DJ Mr Smutlee came through with a quality blend of funky and bashment for them, and while we could have just bunged it up a couple of days ago, we wanted to give you lovely, dedicated dance music fans a bit more depth for your blog perusal. Cos it's not like you only want free stuff, no not even slightly...

Ahem.

So, here it is - BMB vs Smutlee.

BMB: Introduce yourself please!
Hello, Im DJ Smutlee AKA Lee. See what i did there?  Im a Club DJ, Mixtape maker, & Blend specialist, from London.

BMB: How would you describe your sound?
Hip-Hop & Dancehall are the foundation of my sound, and i'll use this to bring in other genres wether it be funky, dubstep, grime or whatever. Over the last year or so i've been pushing the Uk Funky/Bashment sound.

BMB: What would you say your main Influences are?
As long as i've got good new music, im always inspired. I'd say my favourite producers right now are Steven 'Di Genius' (Dancehall), Sticky (House/Garage) and Swizz Beatz (Hip Hop). and how can i forget West ham - when they play well!!

BMB: Any interesting plans coming up?
I really need to get into producing, its just finding time. Other than that, more djing.

BMB: We hear you're a bit of a sneaker connoisseur... is that true?
Haha im no connosieur. i was brought up on Hi Tec squash cos my mum could get them cheap, I'm all about Air Max these days.

BMB: Oh ok. Tell us a joke then.
Heres a dodgy music related joke - dont judge me from this:

"I was in the pub yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to fart. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my farts with the beat. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my pint and noticed that everybody was staring at me.

Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod."

Booooooooo - get him off!!!!!

BMB: Damn straight. But if you want to hear more like that, Smutlee is also playing the next night in Bristol, with MJ Cole...

Exclusive! Bass Music Mix 7 - J:Kenzo (Soul Shakerz, Argon, Dub Police)

September 28

Kenzo-headphone

I hooked up with Jay Kenzo recently and asked him if he would make something for our Bass Music Mix Series.
The man was up for it and got the mix few days ago in my mailbox so here you go !!

1- So first thanks you for doing this mix for us ! For people who dont know you yet What kind of vibes can we expect in a J:Kenzo set ?

Anything goes really, i love playing deep dubwise riddims aswell the more uptempo dancefloor tracks. Depends on what crowd i am playing to, on a typical set i like to fuse the two together. I believe a dj's set should be about progression... knowing the right time to build the crowd up and bring them back down again.

2- Discovered you through your excellent release on Argon called Mortal Kombat which was pretty deep, then recently you sent me that kind of soca dubstep tune called Hoods up I've been playing a lot (charted on the blog in august), you also did a remix for roska, are you going more in a uk funky soca tropical way right now ?    Or you still making different kind of tunes ?

Different kinda tunes, depends on what i'm feeling at the time when i'm in the studio.
The Roska remix was really enjoyable to build, and i'm glad its been accepted across the board from the dubstep heads to the funky crew, I think there is still a great deal of space for producers to experiment in dubstep, that was the whole reason i loved the sound from the beginning.

3 - You're playing at the dub police night @ Fabric in October, pretty excited I guess ? Doest that means you have some stuff forthcoming on the label ?

I'm really looking forward to it! It will be my first booking for dub police and fabric and it falls right on fabrics 10th year anniversary. Tune wise, fingers crossed there will be something out on dub police in the near future. I played Caspa some of my productions which he has signed, but it is all under wraps at the moment.

4- Finally, what's in the pipeline?  forthcoming tunes, remixes ?

The next project i'm involved in that will be released is from a german producer some of you may of heard of called Twisted, which is forthcoming on my own label 'Soul Shakerz'. The track is called 'Robots' and feature's a remix from myself and a remix from Roska. The track is due out late October so make sure you check it.
I'm soon to have another 12" ready for Argon Records and i am currently working on an album for release sometime in 2010.

J:Kenzo - Exclusive Mix for Bassmusicblog.com

01. Twisted - Changes
02. Von D - Berlin  Call
03. DJ Heny G - Hardo Bread
04. J:Kenzo - Constant (crack dub mix)
05. J:Kenzo - Mortal Kombat
06. J:Kenzo - Tekno Bass
07. J:Kenzo - Hoods Up
08. Roska - Holograph (J:Kenzo Remix)

Harper Boogie, The Polish Music Scene... Plus A Mix :)

June 8

Harper Boogie is a name that has cropped up in various places I frequent online over the past few years. Gradually, I found out that it belongs to a dude named Marcin, who has a radio show in Poland, and as time has gone by he's always been very supportive of my mixes, giving them airtime inna Polish land.

My interest in all things Polish has been piqued by a recent visit to Krakow and Warsaw (see previous post - http://bassmusicblog.com/krakow-liveow ) so when Marcin sent over a mix for the blog, I thought I'd ask him a few questions about working in radio and the music scene in Poland in general. Enjoy!

[Lepperintro]

REKTCHORDZ – Feed Your Head (ELITE FORCE remix) / U & A

Marszull_com_dscf9699033

Easy Marcin! I understand you work for a radio station. What's your musical background?
I just love music. This is my full time job. Lots of things and projects at the same time, but all about music.
For more than a decade, apart from DJing and playing and promoting bass music for years, I’m a journalist (music magazines like Machina, Plastik, Laif, Brum etc). Basically, I’m a radio journalist / DJ. I used to work for Sonic Records (www.sonicrecords.pl) as a music research person (UK market specialist – we distributed / promoted such labels as  Kingsize, Finger Lickin, Good Looking, Mo’Wax, Rephlex, Warp, Ninja Tune, Freskanova to name just a few). Right now i just do some projects for them from time to time. I’ve compiled many various compilations. One of them was called 'Plastikfikation', and according to Wyborcza - the biggest and most influential Polish newspaper - was the best and most important club compilation released in Poland. It came out in 1999, and it was a mix of funky and skankin breaks, good ol' big beat etc. – Freestylers, Laidback, Dub Pistols, Fatboy Slim, M/A/R/R/S etc. I’ve also done other compilations of old soul, funk and disco.

Together with Bert (we DJ togther as Boogie Mafia) I did a cover mix CD for Laif magazine called 'Hard Boogie' with tunes from Finger Lickin, Lot49, Burrito, Sinister, Westway -that issue sold somethine like 10,000 copies. And I think DJ mag once wrote that 'Boogie Mafia is the one to watch'. Or something like that. Which was nice :) I’m also a member of Beats Friendly crew collective - I play a bit softer and deeper with them, or kind of on a funk / reggae / hip hop kind of vibe.

How long have you been doing your show, and what style does it cover?
Previously, i’ve worked for Radiostacja, but for about two years I've worked for Radio Euro, the 4th national Polish radio channel (and the only one with good music!). I’ve got 4 radio shows: 'Basstion', which is every Sunday at midnight - all about huge basslines and fat beats, whatever genre its is, and I air guest DJ mixes too from artists i like and respect; Funkadelia, every Sunday from 6-8pm - this focusses more on funk, hip hop, ragga, bashment, funky reggae, soul etc; and finally Eklektyka every Wednesday - which is just good music from any genre.

What are your main musical influences and favourites?
When it comes to dance music, for me it’s all about really fat beats (mostly broken and heavy), huge basslines and funky grooves. I still love my breaks, but it’s hard to find a good and fresh breaks record these days. I’ve always been  pretty open musically so apart from breaks it can also be tech-funk, 4/4 heavy bassline stuff, some dubstep etc.  And i’ve always loved  ragga and dancehall, especially mixed with fat hip hop beats or more uptempo modern club rhythms, right now stuff like Jinx In Dub, Baobinga, Redlight, South Rakkas Crew, Toddla T, Greenmoney, Major Lazer, RSD, Tayo etc. At home I like my Nick Drake or Pharoah Sanders too. And i reckon Velvet, and The Big Pink, will be huge! Oh, and I’m a sucker for party New Orleans music, especially the big brassy stuff.

Tell us a bit about this mix.
I describe my sound as hard boogie. Example? Check the Elite Force remix of Rektchordz (sHack is one of my heroes), the Introspective mix of Peter Paul 'Dark & Deep'... Huge, pulsating, hard to resist groove based on heavy, tight beats. And I love that Peo De Pitte remix - pretty spectacular!

It’s not always about upfront music, but it’s all about tunes that are guaranteed to work in the club for me and make people scream and jump up. I’ve added some classic acappellas, samples etc. There’s my little mash-up too (tried and tested!). As an intro I used a sample of a Polish redneck politician – chopped it up a bit ;)

What do you think about the music scene in Poland? When I was there recently, it seemed like Krakow in particular is very 'on it' in terms of fresh sounds and knowledge of upcoming DJs...
Well, this is a tricky subject, because my answer should be really long. I think you just spent time with proper people and played to a proper crowd. Kraków and Łódź were always good for drum’n’bass, and a bit breaks too (and some happy hardcore and rave in Lodz!). Warsaw , the capital, has been the busiest city in Poland for years, loads of parties, great concerts, etc ., top DJs and bands every weekend, and plenty of midweek events too. But maybe 8 to 10 years ago you had less parties but with a more open-minded and educated crowd. Right now it’s all about current cheesy house hits (like everywhere) or all about emo, flashy, snoby and in most cases empty electro cool kids with no proper respect for music and artists. Aquasky for them is like a band who has just made bassline / fidget stuff for a couple of years. Possibly they released a few breaks records, maybe. If Fake Blood could play at the same time and at the same place using the same records but as Theo Keating or The Wiseguys it is possible that no one would even turn up, and if they did I'm not sure they would dance! Which is funny and sad at the same time.

But to be positive, the scene is vital, there’s a new generation of clubgoers with lots of energy so i’m sure it’s just a matter of time when they will start to buy music rather than just get it free off blogs (although maybe that's just the way things are now?) and it will develop into something more than just the current 'trendy' movement. Something more conscious, more educated. I've always tried to do it - educate people - in my radio shows, reviews, articles, even my DJ sets. Its good to be able to show people that without The Winstons, and so much other 'old' music, it’s possible that there could be no drum’n’bass, no breakbeat, no dubstep etc. Try and tell people, 'just listen to as much music as possible, be open, be more and more sensitive etc. - and get to love huge basslines and fat beats!'
