From The Vaults: Sid Le Rock 'Naked' (DJ Koze Remix) [Cereal Killers 2007]

July 15

DJ Koze has always been one of the most sonically innovative producers operating within the realms of what some would call tech house, and this remix from 2007 is a peerless example. I think what I like most about it is the way it sounds like a classic house record made by someone who has drunk a full bottle of cough syrup - it sort of throbs along in slow motion with those weird treated vocals, Chicago bassline and cut up string noises. Plenty of sub bass pressure in there as well. If I absolutely had to, I'd say it's probably the sort of thing you would hear the DJ drop later on at the Mos Eisley cantina whilst Greedo asks you for a sip of your water.

I'd recommend picking it up as part of the awesome DJ Koze remixes compilation 'Reincarnations' that came out recently, which you can get here.

From The Vaults: Toasty 'The Knowledge' (Hotflush Recordings 2004)

July 8

Seen as this blog is all about bass music, I thought it would be a good idea to delve into the murky depths of my record collection to see what lost bass music classics I could find to blather about on this here blog. And, lo and behold, I immediately stumbled across this tune - Toasty 'The Knowledge', which came out in 2004 on the peerless Hotflush Recordings.

I first heard this tune at a night called Fuse in Manchester, when the night's resident DJs Nick + Fash - aka the Electrosluts - would often start their sets with it. Still the finest party DJs I have ever had the privilege to witness, they would drop 808 driven booty bass, hard glitching Tipper-esque breakbeat, speed garage, proto-dubstep / breakstep and the occasional perfectly judged curveball (Rockwell 'Somebody's Watching Me' - yes please). You can probably imagine the looks of total bafflement on the crowd's face as those hard, clattering drums come in with that booming sub note - and how quickly the hands went in the air when the vocoders came in.

Classic stuff. Buy it here.
