I Am A Camera remix (free download)

Ready for something completely different, even by HeavyFeet standards!?

Week seven (of eight), and we offer you our penultimate remix from 'Manchester : Remixed', of a relatively new-to-be-Manchester-associated artist, I Am A Camera. The band consist of Francesca and Ian (pictured above), Francesca being the Mancunian connection, and between the pair of them they output high grade, vocal driven, electro-pop.

The buzz around the band has been gradually building, as you'd expected if you'd recently been featured in the Sunday Times Magazine, on Pop Justice and apparently (soon to be) in GQ. It certainly all points to a bright future. If you're London based and are interested in hearing I Am A Camera live, they can regularly be found gigging in the capital, so keep and eye out for dates on their site. I'm yet to see the guys play live yet, but I'm sure it won't be long before I do.

So, on to the remix... The original of 'Red Letter Day' (the bands' forthcoming single), is around the 105bpm mark, and as we'd been meaning to have a play around with 'Moom' vibes for a while, we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck in. As always (as the eight track remix project we undertook in July went), we focused around the vocal, and also in this case a fair few of the original synth parts, seeing as they'd been recorded from quality pieces of studio kit, it seemed a shame not to use some of them. Getting the production right proved pretty difficult, I won't lie, it took a while, but we were (and are) very happy with the end result, and hope our experimentation at this relatively untapped bpm (for HeavyFeet) is of interest to those who've been following this project.

The Whip remix (free download)

The Whip were a bit of last minute addition to the 'Manchester : Remixed' project, nevertheless, a very welcome addition. We'd met Nathan and Fee from the band briefly in Ibiza in 2008 when we were out kicking about with The Loose Cannons one night before we played at a party in San Antonio, and thought they were very nice people, so when the option of adding them to the project came about, we were very happy. So, this week's HeavyFeet remix giveaway is of the band's new single, 'Keep Or Delete', which is taken from their brand new album, 'Wired Together', which is out now on Southern Fried, and produced by Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream, Revered & The Makers, etc).

This remix is actually quite dancefloor focused, unlike some of the remixes in the 'Manchester : Remixed' project. It's also 4/4, which is probably pretty important for anyone who was turned off by last week's 3/4 dubstep-tinged remix of Airship! We've kept the remix pretty simple in terms of parts, favouring an electronic driven soundset, and of course, keeping it very vocal led (one of the key points of the project).

Free Airship remix

Week four (of eight)!

This week's remix offering is of Airship, another great Manchester-based band, who were involved in 'Manchester : Remixed' with us in July. 'Algebra' is actually the track that first put me on to the band initially, but it's recently been re-released ahead of their debut album, 'Stuck In The Ocean', which was released this week on Pias, so it seemed like the perfect track to remix for the project. 'Algebra' is written in a 3/4 time signature, and around the 145bpm mark, so similar to last week's remix of Santiago Street Machine, we thought we'd work the remix around a similar tempo to the original (seeing as sticking to the original song, where possible, was one of the goals of the project). Sticking to the 3/4 feel proved interesting at first, especially as we went down a dubsteppy route with the remix, but we think, all things considered, it's come out pretty well.

Airship can be found constantly touring throughout Europe, so if you like the original, be sure to check them out live. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys play a benefit gig in a tiny pub near to where our studio is (in the middle of nowhere) not so long back, and they were very tight as a live act. Free Santiago Street Machine remix

August 31

So, we're into the third week of giving away the eight remixes we completed (in a month) for the 'Manchester : Remixed' project, that we set ourselves in July. This week's remix is pretty unique to what you'd expect from us, as HeavyFeet. We wanted to play up to the original tempo of the song, so we decided to work at 140pm on this one, instead of bringing it down 10bpm or so, to a more comfortable territory. Retaining as much of the original song as possible, we focused on the band's vocals and synth parts, using carefully chosen additional layers to put the remix together.

Santiago Street Machine are a Manchester-based three piece band whose focus is to make 'big music, for big stages.' After seeing/hearing the guys play live recently (prior to starting the remix project), I can testify to that. They definitely have something anthemic going on with their sound that I can see transforming well from the smaller, moodier venues they can currently be found touring (Manchester Academy 3, Zanzibar in Liverpool, etc), to bigger festival stages. With recent gig highlights, supporting Hot Chip, and playing main stage at Manchester Pride, I suspect it's only a matter of time.

Free Jessie Rose Trip remix

This week's free remix from our 'Manchester : Remixed' project is of The Jessie Rose Trip. Unlike last week's remix that we gave away from this project (Dutch Uncles - 'X-O'), this is actually quite typical of our current HeavyFeet output, taking a more Chicago house orientated path, perhaps with a little more vocal use than we would typically go for in such a remix, but baring in mind, our aim was for all eight of these remixes to retain as much of the original song as possible, due to the basis that inspired the 'Manchester : Remixed' project in the first place.

You can be forgiven for thinking The Jessie Rose Trip is a (mis-spelt) side project of Jesse Rose, the house music producer, but it's not, actually. T.J.R.T are a Manchester-based three piece, who have received support from The Guardian, in the form of their 'new band of the day' feature, as well as radio support from the likes of Huw Stephens, Mark Lamaar, and various BBC 6 Music DJs, with Jessie's voice receiving comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Duffy, from acclaimed critics.

Manchester : Remixed

You may have seen us making a fair old amount of noise about this project via Twitter and Facebook, so I thought I'd put together a little post, just to explain what we're up to at present with our current project, 'Manchester : Remixed'. In terms of HeavyFeet and 'projects', you can be forgiven for thinking that we're about to embark upon another epic, year long project, ala the '12x12', as this time around we're talking about a relatively short and somewhat compact project, to be undertaken (and completed) between July 1st and July 31st.

In essence, 'Manchester : Remixed' is us, HeavyFeet, remixing eight of the current wave of great Manchester associated bands and songwriters over a one month period, and presenting you, the online audience, the results at the end of the process. Whilst the project will be concluded by a 'remix special' BBC Introducing radio show (on Sunday 7th August), of which we shall be presenting all eight remixes, and having a bit of a chat about the process in which we created them, we also wanted the content to made available, for free, to people all over the world, via select music blogs and online social media platforms etc, and will be doing from August 8th.

A little more about the artists involved: Whilst we've involved international touring acts as part of the eight featured artists, we've also been sure to involve some less-prominant, more underground artists, that the city has to offer. For us, it's important that we represent both sides of what Manchester is outputting at present (and in the future), so presenting a variety of profiles (of the different artists) is something we feel strongly about.

To celebrate us going live with the project (we kicked things off last Friday, July 1st), below is a free-to-download early/bonus remix of Delphic's 'Doubt'. 12x12 Various Remixes - Vol.2

As we had some extra remixes done during the '12x12' project (which, as you know by now, saw us release a single every month between April 2010-March 2011), we decided to package these additional versions and release them for your enjoyment as one final release from this project.

The release features six previously unheard remixes of HeavyFeet singles from the '12x12' from Deekline, Dillon Francis, Sam Young (Plant Music), Jason Forrest (Nightshifters) and Michael McLardy. There should be, we hope, something for everyone. Well, that is unless you like brostep, of course.

Drum roll please.... the final single from the '12x12' project is here!

The year long process has seen us deliver twelve individual singles over twelve months (beginning in April 2010), featuring ten unique vocalists and (so far) nineteen remix artists. 'I Like It' is a 90bpm double time skanker, focusing on heavy, repetitive bass, crispy drums and cheeky guitar cuts, whilst Bubbz (of Bubbz & The Black Notes, and previous HeavyFeet '12x12' single, 'Young & Dumb') delivers some of the young year's most hilarious lyrics, with an equally fun flow.

Our Club Dub switches the tempo to the 130bpm mark, taking slamming 4/4 drums, rolling subs, tuned percussion, choice vocal chops and a heavy dub middle eight, concocting a heavy main room house vibe, similar to that of our remix of Roisin Murphy 'Momma's Place', which we did last year. Bass Music Blog's main men, Skinnz & I.D, take the shennanigans up a level further, reaching for the 140bpm bracket, incorporating loopy synths, emotional leads and soft chord patterns, coupled with the occasional Bubbz vocal drop. I've gotta say, this remix shows levels of epicness previously unheard!

The journey of '12x12' can now be read at heavyfeetmusic.com where a weekly blog update is underway, putting the label model of the '12x12' online, for people to utilise as they see fit. The concept has been simple; avoid the traditional album format and allow fans more regular access to fresh musical offerings and exciting club friendly remixes, whilst highlighting the initial foundation that the project was based upon: The importance of direct-to-fan communication, high quality production and regular output in this new digital era is paramount.

There's been some great support on this final single, with Skream, Todd Edwards, Crookers, Tom Findlay (Groove Armada), AC Slater (and many more), all declaring their love for it.

HeavyFeet Winter Promo Mix:

Well, it's taken us a while to get round to doing this, so apologies to the people who were asking after it a little while back. As you'll have noticed over this mix and our Autumn Mix, we've been moving away from the 50 tracker mixes, and back towards the 30 number, so whilst there's a cut on quantity, we'd certainly hope listeners would agree the quality is still very much present! Well, we're 11 singles into the 12 of the newly (finally!) named, '12x12' project. (The '12 singles over 12 months' was getting a bit longwinded to be honest.) As we've been working with Mr Jon Rice quite a lot over this last year, we thought we'd invite him back (he featured on 'Saving Me', our 4th single) to vocal our penultimate single. 'Raise a Glass' is a contemporary take on the classic Chicago house sound that we've always sought inspiration from, and includes bumping bass, skippy beats, uplifting synth chords and hooky vocals.

Taking these elements one step further, and drawing influence from the 2 Bears (Raf Daddy & Joe Goddard from Hot Chip), we open the track up with a simple club beat and then lead into a suitably developed song, letting epic synths sweep into the chorus section alongside Jon’s deeper lyrical side, giving the breakdown a lovely hands-in-the-air moment to what is an otherwise rather vocally sparse, club influenced number. Our Club Mix takes the house vibes up to a peak time level, reaching for loud, tribal percussion, a deep rolling sub line, select vocal snippets and subtle strings, dropping a main room friendly house track with all the right components to keep the dancefloor full.

Australia's Q45 (owner of the great house label, Yes Yes Records) ramps things up with an all out 90's-tinged house affair, manipulating the original chord stabs and morphing vocal cuts amongst a ravey bass and classic drum machine style beats. Diesler rounds off the package with slow burner of a broken beat re-rub, choosing heavy Latin-influenced drums and a deep, pulsating bass to create an astoundingly intense build up, which conjures up a chaotic yet soulful take on the original.

Lots of support and appreciative talk from the likes of Tom Findlay (Groove Armada), Zed Bias, Lars Moston, Black Noise/Aquasky and Act Yo Age on this release.
