Breakspoll 2010 @ Fabric

February 5

Mail

Time for a quick update on this year's Breakspoll.  It's probably the highlight of the breaks calendar, and I'll bet it's the busiest Fabric ever gets on a Thursday.  I've played a number of times and it's usually one of my best gigs of the year, largely because everyone's so up for it - no posers, just people who are really into the tunes, and that's pretty rare for a big club in London, I find.  Loosely based around a vote and awards ceremony (voting is open now so go and have a check), the main attraction for most is in fact an enormous mash-up session and a top drawer party.  This year's line up has been announced and includes breaks heavyweights like Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz, Elite Force and Deekline, but of more interest to this blogwriter, a number of genre hooligans like High Rankin, Flore and Vent.

What looks possibly even more hype, and a definite coup, is that the next day sees the afterparty down at matter - where they've managed to secure the legend that is Kool Keith.  Superb.

Check it all out at www.breakspoll.com.

While you're waiting, you can break some speakers with this fine promo mix from the man like High Rankin.  Kapow.

High Rankin on the new Sub Slayers

October 19

L_0dabb24e783bb4fbd98896b7042a

Sub Slayers is a new label that launches today.  It's a project from Kiss FM's Jay Cunning, the aim of which is to bring some actually decent breakbeat orientated music to people.  I think he might be onto something here - breaks has been floundering a bit in recent times, but I'm starting to think there's gonna be a bit of a comeback one of these days.  But that's for another day.

Anyway, the first release is out today; it's High Rankin with Sitting In The Wet - a hype, noisy stomp, kind of a crossover between dubstep and breaks.  It's been getting a lot of play from both camps, and you can hear it in the promotional mix by the man Cunning himself:

1  Gella - Chi Kaa Chi Koo (Gunfire Dub) / FAT!
2  High Rankin - Sitting In The Wet / Sub Slayers
3  Bitin' Back - She's Breakin Up 2009 / Finn Breaks
4  Gella - Twinkle ft. $pyda / Sub Slayers
5  Gella - Twinkle ft. $pyda (Nail mix) / Sub Slayers
6  Freq Nasty - Grand Theft / Distinctiove
7  Stereo:Type - Sickening / Hardcore Beats
8  Nursery Of Naughtiness - Thug / Exceptional
9  Rico Tubbs - The Party (Splitloop Remix) / Menu Music
10  I.D. - Dangerous / Sub Slayers
11  The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up / XL
12  Wink - Higher States Of Conciousness / Strictly Rhythm
13  Raw As F**k - The Slammer (Affinity Remix) / Dubplate
14  Deekline & Wizard - Baila Balia (VENT Remix) / Against The Grain
15  CTRL Z vs The Freestylers - Ruffneck 09 (Jay Cunning VIP) / Never Say Die
16  Deeklie & Wizard vs Fresh - Blow ft $pyda (Affinity Remix) / Rat
17  Liz Melody - Skeptical (Karton Remix) / Sound Of Habib
18  illAudio - The Remedy / Sub Slayers
19  The Prodigy - Omen (Noisia Remix) / Take Me To The Hospital
20  VENT vs Reso - Rumble / Subway
21  Chase & Status - Pieces ft Plan B / Ram Record

Stay tuned for future releases from the likes of er, me, and also from Gella who for my money is one of the most exciting new producers around right now.  Go check.
