HeavyFeet ft. Bubbz - I Like It (the final free single!)

HeavyFeet ft. Bubbz - I Like It
(Original, Club Dub, Skinnz & I.D. Remix)
Stamp! Beats - Release Date: 07.03.11

Drum roll please.... the final single from the '12x12' project is here!

The year long process has seen us deliver twelve individual singles over twelve months (beginning in April 2010), featuring ten unique vocalists and (so far) nineteen remix artists. 'I Like It' is a 90bpm double time skanker, focusing on heavy, repetitive bass, crispy drums and cheeky guitar cuts, whilst Bubbz (of Bubbz & The Black Notes, and previous HeavyFeet '12x12' single, 'Young & Dumb') delivers some of the young year's most hilarious lyrics, with an equally fun flow.

Our Club Dub switches the tempo to the 130bpm mark, taking slamming 4/4 drums, rolling subs, tuned percussion, choice vocal chops and a heavy dub middle eight, concocting a heavy main room house vibe, similar to that of our remix of Roisin Murphy 'Momma's Place', which we did last year. Bass Music Blog's main men, Skinnz & I.D, take the shennanigans up a level further, reaching for the 140bpm bracket, incorporating loopy synths, emotional leads and soft chord patterns, coupled with the occasional Bubbz vocal drop. I've gotta say, this remix shows levels of epicness previously unheard!

The journey of '12x12' can now be read at heavyfeetmusic.com where a weekly blog update is underway, putting the label model of the '12x12' online, for people to utilise as they see fit. The concept has been simple; avoid the traditional album format and allow fans more regular access to fresh musical offerings and exciting club friendly remixes, whilst highlighting the initial foundation that the project was based upon: The importance of direct-to-fan communication, high quality production and regular output in this new digital era is paramount.

There's been some great support on this final single, with Skream, Todd Edwards, Crookers, Tom Findlay (Groove Armada), AC Slater (and many more), all declaring their love for it.

I.D. - Latin, Soul, Funk mix

November 30

Raybarretto_dsos_pic

That there is Ray Barretto.  He's one of my favourite musicians, a conga player that made his name in the 60's and 70's in New York.  There was a great scene in East Harlem in New York back in the 60s, where musicians of Hispanic descent (Mr Barretto above was born to Puerto Rican parents) infused their traditional musics with the influences of the culture around them - US soul, blues, and so on.  Correspondingly, down in Brazil around the same time, local musicians were doing the same thing - the likes of Banda Black Rio and Jorge Ben were being influenced by US soul music coming over the airwaves, and incorporating those sounds into their music.

This is a mix I put together of all that kind of stuff (and more.  It even features the theme to Shaft In Africa which is quite possibly the funkiest piece of music ever written).   Hope you enjoy it (stream below or right click and download from this link):

Weekend Mixes

August 6

Pastedgraphic

You know, I've been so busy recently, I haven't even had a chance to affront your eyeballs with any pictures of unattractive brutalist architecture.  Well, no time like the present, so here's a big picture of the Trellick Tower in London, which I was admiring this week on a train out of West London.  It was designed by Erno Goldfinger, who was apparently the inspiration for the James Bond character.  So the story goes, he was about to sue Ian Fleming the use of his name, until Fleming told him he'd just change the character name to 'Goldprick'....

So anyway.  Mixes for you to enjoy this weekend.  Let's start with my favourite mix of the week, from F.   F is somewhat of an expert when it comes to blending deep, rolling dubstep, and melodic techno influences, and this is a great example of his stuff.   It's a podcast for Concepto Radio in Spain, which looks to be a pretty good site, if you hablais Espanol.

Next up, let's stay on the deepish dubstep tip and turn to the latest Resident Advisor podcast, from Bristol's very own Peverelist.  You'll likely know what to expect from him by now; this is a man fixated by rhythms, counter rhythms, polyrhythms and bass that whacks you in the gut.  I often find that with Pev's tunes, if I just drop the needle down in the middle of the track, I don't really get into it.  But if I play the track from the start, then by 3 minutes in I'm lost, adrift in the interplay of the snares, percussion and looping melodic motifs.  So find some time and give this mix the attention it deserves.

Let's now emerge (slowly) from the deep, with this mix from Mackaveli repping the Fabric crew in Mixclouds's 'Curators Series'.  Starting out with the awesome Mt Kimbie remix of Foals 'Spanish Sahara', it pretty quickly swings up towards B'more club courtesy of DJ Class, and classic 2 step from Wookie.  It's a scattershot approach but they're all wicked tunes so it makes for a fun ride:

....and speaking of B'More club, one of the original players, Debonair Samir just uploaded this mix on his soundcloud; 63 minutes, 41 tunes, all produced by the man himself.  It's not big, it's not clever, but my goodness is it fun.  I suppose that depends on whether you consider the sound of Lil Jon shouting over a Think break to be fun - we certainly do.  It also contains Samir's remix of Dizzee Rascal - 'Pussyhole' which I cained solidly in my sets for about a year.  Big.  Tracklist at the soundcloud page.

</object>

Last of all, oh look, it's me again.  Well, if I can't plug all my hard work on this blog, where can I plug it?  I've been booked to play at the Phono festival in Denmark next month, which looks sick - and as a prelude, the guys involved asked me to do a mix for their blog.  This one starts out ambient with one of my favourite producers, Tim Hecker, and stays moody, cold and deep, although gets more banging later.  It also involves a personal favourite tune of mine which concluded me & Bao's first album, and concludes this mix also.

Solo I.D. tunes mix

August 5

4856435076_f867e67dae

This week has absolutely flown by.  Apologies for the paucity of blog posts this week - and indeed for the downtime (if you even noticed!); the blog was down yesterday and half of today due to a DoS attack on our hosters, Posterous.  Luckily, they're generally pretty on the ball and quickly set up a new server, so now I've pointed the domain to the new server (no small task for a technical halfwit like myself) and we seem to be back on track.

So, as you might have gathered from Sam's post earlier this week, I was playing in Kiev at the weekend.  It was one of those gigs where everything goes right, and any working DJ will tell you that this is something of a rarity.  We all have our ideal of what a gig should be like, but it's not often that everything matches up to that - the club is full, the crowd are going mental, the sound system is good, the monitors are clear, all the equipment works, the booze flows steadily from the bar to your hand, you get your selection and mixing spot on, and girls even start taking their clothes off.  Yep, to get all those, including the last one, is very rare indeed.  So, on that front, out to the Kiev crew for a wicked night.  The dude with the mic in the photo above is Valta, one of the promoters, and if you want to see the rest of the photos from that night, you can find them here.

As a prelude to that night, I had done a mix for the Kievbass Radio Show on Sub.fm.  I decided to do an egotastic mix of entirely my own solo tunes,  which I've never done before - and I think it came out pretty well.  I suppose I would.  But I reckon it shows quite nicely where the I.D. profile is going - dark, spacious, jungle-influenced breakstep and dubstep (and even some DnB at the end there).  You can check the full show archive here, or just stream my mix below.

I.D. ft Rider Shafique -The Light (dub)
I.D. - Nine Tree Hill (Mata-Syn)
I.D. - Rollage (dub)

I.D. - Feudal (dub)
I.D. - Akusative (Cool & Deadly)
I.D. - Stitch (dub)

I.D. - Tell Ya (Sub Slayers)
F Word - Death Valley (I.D. remix) (Dusted Breaks)

I.D. interview in K Mag

July 14

Pastedgraphic

K Mag are loving us lot right now.  Here's an interview with me, to coincide with the release of my Mustang EP on Sub Slayers.  Looking back over it, I sort of feel like I should've gone into more detail on the old midrange/sub quandary.  I remember a few years back, chatting to a record shop owner in Vienna, who told me that he always finished his club night with our track 'Hood Thang' - and the next day, people would come into the shop, desperate to find out what the track was.  Then they'd listen on headphones, and decide not to buy it.  Was this because the bass is all sub and only really comes into its own on a system? Or maybe it only sounds good when you're pissed.  Hey ho.  Anyway, read the interview here.  And don't forget my summer mix, embedded below:

I.D. - Mustang EP: free tune & new mix

June 11

400full

Epicly tired this week.  Still, time waits for no man, as the sage Dizzee Rascal once pointed out, and today I'm bringing news of my new release, plus free tune and new mix.

So; my latest EP 'Mustang' is released today on Sub Slayers (pre order on vinyl here) - it's a 4-tracker ranging from breakstep to dubstep and, er, deepstep, has rave reviews in all the mags and stuff, and plays out from everyone, from Altered Natives to Starkey to Reso to TRG.  To celebrate, I'm giving away my VIP edit of Mustang in full 320 technicolour, which has been smashing up the dance left right and centre (yes yes this may sound immodest.  But it's a post about me, may as well go the whole hog, n'est-ce pas?).  So:  get the free tune here  -

Then enjoy my latest mix, packed full of nutritious dubs (download link here):

Then if you're still hungry, preview the rest of the release via this natty player:

I.D. mix & interview for ThisIsBreaks

February 24

436723652_ce4e7f58e5
(pic)

I've just done a mix for the fine folks at This Is Breaks.  It's a website dedicated to breaks music, which, y'know, hasn't been getting the best of press over the last year or 3.  But I've been noticing lately, that there's plenty of music that could fall under the 'breaks umbrella', if people wanted to see it as such - from the likes of Seiji, Octa Push, Martyn, and plenty more.  It's all 'broken beat', it's all funky, rolling stuff, it's all current, interesting, creative and relevant to what's going on today.

So, we had a bit of a chat/interview about what I thought concerning the whole scene, and I put together a mix about what I feel 'the breaks scene' these days should be looking to incorporate.  In short, loads of cool beats, no Justice ripoffs, no trance, and a distinct lack of The Biggest Snare In The World.  See what you reckon.

I.D. & Baobinga - Bass Music Sessions

Here's a short minimix featuring 4 tracks from the album - please feel free to embed, share, link to, etc etc!

So, week three of this diary then.  The promotion has started in earnest, release date is March 1st, and for me, this is the hardest part, I think.  This is due to another problem of doing things yourself - while I talked last time of having built up skills and contacts to help with various aspects of the release, PR and marketing isn't really a skillset that most artists have.  Again, experience helps - you have an idea of who to send the albums to, and how to do it, and drawing on press releases from past albums and singles I've written a press release that is suitably self-aggrandising.

I've now sent out the album to roughly 150 DJs, journalists, producers and so on, and we've had promising reactions - Bok Bok's playing one track, Ginz too, Reso, Jus Wan, and plenty of others.  We've had lots of play on internet radio and a couple of local FM stations to boot.  I've also had indications that we'll get some form of coverage in a couple of the national UK dance mags - including at least one review, and that's on top of the news piece we had in KMag recently.  So it's all looking hopeful, although simply getting a mention in magazine X or on radio show Y doesn't do much on its own.  I learned this very early - my first single in 2004 got single of the month in several UK magazines, my second single didn't even get reviewed once.  Guess which sold more?  Yup, the second one.  So really what you need is a groundswell, people hearing about you from lots of different sources, and then with any luck the message will stick.  (Obviously though, if there was a formula there wouldn't be so many PR companies and marketing agencies out there!)

Another opportunity arose this week when I got the chance to go to a BBC Radio meet & greet in London.  I'd been hit up recently by their press office, again because of this blog, and some weeks later (to my great surprise) they sent over an invite to this event.  For them it was a chance to tell us what their specialist music output was going to be doing over the next few months.  Which, you know, all good, but I missed that part because of the traffic on the motorway.  Anyway, for me it was a great opportunity to meet some producers and put CD's into their hands, so on Wednesday I spent about 3 hours printing labels, burning CDs and printing off press releases (see pics above).  Met some cool people, Westwood was DJing (I didn't give him a CD) and there was a free bar.  If I'd known that, I would have got the train (although thinking about it, it was a BBC social do.  Of course there was gonna be free booze).  But yeah - another opening that presented itself as a result of prior work done on the blog.

There are two other aspects of the promotion to consider then.  There's the blogging strategy, which is going to amount to two parts - firstly, there's going to be a short promo video - see the gallery above for some work in progress pics!  I still don't know what it's going to be like but I'm excited to see the results; he's obviously putting some proper work in - which will be sent around about a week before the release, and then on the day I'll do a re-mail out to let people know that they can now get it for free.

Then there's the 'word-of-mouth' aspect, which is arguably more important, I think.  What we really need is for people to be going onto random forums we've never heard of, and saying to people 'hey, check out this great free album'.  So that means there's going to be a lot of Facebooking, a lot of twittering, and also a lot of emailing friends and family, asking them to pass the link on to anyone they know who might be interested.  So, being annoying and getting favours off everyone we can think of!

So yeah.  Busy week.  Thanks to Fidz for the lift down to London!

I.D. mix for Forecast Recordings

February 2

L_b1ddfc330dd7e04c10f6003941e1
I just dropped a short mix for the Forecast Recordings radio show in Hungary.  89.9 on your FM dial!  So long as you live near to Szeged in the South East, that is.

Anyway, it's short and sweet, with some new dubs for you to get your teeth into; I went on a bit of a deep one - download here or try this player:

01 DJG - NYC /dub/
02 I.D. feat. Rider Shafique - The Light /dub/
03 I.D. - Slope /dub/
04 Jus Wan - Azure /Pushing Red/
05 Toasty - Splash /Destructive Recordings/
06 Reso vs I.D. - Torvus /Smokin' Sessions/
07 I.D. - Sketch /dub/

....it was in honour of their birthday, and there are another three, which I suggest you go to the post on dubstepforum to check out (for reasons of conciseness) but I can recommend the one by Bunzero too.
