Tell us a bit about your musical vibes...
At the minute I am sampling records, using (real) synths, making beats, and chopping waveforms whilst trying to make melodic, blissed-out phat grooves. Some for the club, and some to get your listening gear round. I guess my current influences would be Funk, Hip-Hop, Dubstep, Wonky, and 60's Psyche.
You're based in NI - what's the music scene like in Belfast?
Really exciting at the minute. There are some great club nights like Hydroponic, Ecker, Crilli, and Homespun all offering different styles right across the board. Thanks to the DJ's running these nights Belfast has recently been host to the likes of Daedelus, Gemmy, Daddy G, Logistics, Harmonic 313, and DJ Food. The Acroplane label has some great new electronic / dubstep / hip-hop / next-ish releases, all of which are free to download directly from their site -
www.acroplane.co.uk - and some artists to check out would be Boxcutter, Space Dimension Controller, BEW, Kinnego Flux, and Filaria.
It's all very experimental at the minute - even though you don't get crowds like you would in Manchester or London there is still a core of underground fans that are very passionate about the music.
What was the idea behind the mix?
About two years ago I heard Flying Lotus for the first time and it blew my mind. Growing up in the 80s and 90s playing Sega games, listening to hip-hop and being a fan of analogue synths, this music really resonated with me. After listening to everything of his I could get my hands on I started to search for other artists that were on a similar trip like Mike Slott, Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept, and Dimlite. A lot of these artist have taken influence from stuff I've been listening to for years like Daedelus, Prefuse 73, and J Dilla, and taken that sound further by incorporating sounds / influences from their childhood. So this mix is the result of my digging expeditions over the last couple of years and how it fits in with where I was musically before that.
Are you producing too? Any releases we should know about?
Yeah at the minute I'm finishing off an album for the
Gamma Proforma label -
www.gammaproforma.com - an up front single,
'Elsewhere', is available to download from iTunes and Beats Digital. Also due for re-release soon is the
Peacewise & Homestyle EP,
'The Beau Selection'. Peacewise & Homestyle is a project I started with a friend in Manchester in 2001. This was around the time I got my MPC and a Yamaha DX7. The EP charts our progress over a year as we got more to used to working with the MPC.
Any shout outs?
I was in London recently for an Urban Arts Conference and met a group of really talented and creative people. Seeing how they focus their energies on their art and what they do to gain recognition for it really inspired me to up my game regarding my music and where I want to take it. So this is for them that's got and them that's not.
Word.
