Cosmin TRG Live at Matter

April 12

4017837258_c1864b6100

I was lucky enough to catch Cosmin TRG play a couple of weeks back in Bristol where he gave a pretty solid definition of where his sound is at these days.  If you haven't caught him live recently, then have a listen to this mix recorded live at the last FWD vs Rinse event at Matter in London, which explains what he's about now.  (i.e., not dubstep).  No tracklist unfortunately, although you'll recognise some of the tracks in here - Mosca's Gold Bricks, TRG's own remix of United Groove, and of course our own James Fox's cheeky edit of Lighter - Skanker, to name a few.

If you like the sound of this, then don't forget to check out the next night - April 30th at Matter, featuring Skream, Benga, Caspa, Roska, Boy Better Know, Rustie, Brackles and a whole host more.  Big!

Producer Q&A: TRG

August 23

L_df67f00a521f4e5aaaa773170cbf

For the next installment in our production Q & A series, we roped in the mighty TRG.  His productions have taken somewhat of a different direction of late, as you can hear on his recent Fact Mix.

How do you approach a tune?  Drums first?  Melody?

I start with drums because that's usually the element of a tune I think of first. I then build the rest around it, usually starting with a simple hook or playing around with a sample.

What time of day do you work best?

I think it's right after breakfast for me. I do sometimes work for 10 hours straight till I get it right. I switch off around 6 or 7 PM and try going out to LIVE! It used to be the other way around, working nights and trying to get a tune done in about 4 hours. Most of the stuff released last year was done like that, turbo-sessions. But I'm enjoying a lot more studio time right now and being able to actually sit some more time on a tune can be beneficial.

Where do you get your inspiration / motivation from?

Inspiration is an odd game. Apparently you think you get yours from architecture, film, books, people, random events, but it's actually a mix of vibes and sounds you were subjected to when you were a kid. It might not be true but it's an interesting theory at least... Motivation is a different thing. You get demotivated by a score of things that happen to you (or more often, things that don't happen no matter how much you work), but rather than throwing in the towel it's more romantic to be a soldier and take it all in.

What do you do when you're not feeling inspired?

I start breaking stuff round the house really... Some people chop beats and hunt for samples, I punch the computer. Luckily my setup is minimal so there's not much to break!

Do you start a tune from scratch, or do you usually have a drumset/template/etc to work from?

I have Logic template with a few VST's loaded up so I dont have to load them up every time I start a tune, but that's not really a template...

If you got a chance would you write pop stuff for a major label (if the money was good?)

I wouldn't do it for money. I'd do it for a pack of gold bricks! Sure I'd love to, pop music is a test for any producer I think. How cool would it be to hear your beats and bass used as ringtones! Seriously, pop is nothing to be ashamed of if you can make it interesting!

What's the boring, workhorse plugin/piece of kit that you use all the time?

EQ? I EQ everything obssessively, never use anything on the master (I do clip it like a bad boy tho).

What's the coolest bit of kit you've got and do you actually use it much?

My setup is minimal therefore uncool but I like it that way! Cold and clinical. I'd love to get some synths tho!

Do you mixdown your own stuff?  Reckon there's a stigma around this?

I like playing my stuff and like to think other people want to play my stuff before it's out on vinyl so I try to get mixdowns that you can play in a club right off the bat. Would be wicked if I had someone to do all the tinkering for me, but in the end it's a craft like any other. Imagine Banksy drawing some lines and then having some art students do the rest for him!

What production technique do you think is really overused / annoying?

That vocal stuttering effect. It's not irritating per se, but if you listen 3 hours of it I guess it can be annoying.

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you started out?

Maybe the fact that I shouldn't try to make tunes to fit a certain genre, rather than just make tunes with character and message.

Exclusive Unreleased TRG Tune

August 7

Index

Oh gosh!  It's been a good week on the blog for free music, and since it's free tune Friday (ahem) we're chuffed to bring you this exclusive TRG track.  It's a remix of Al Haca, and it's a track that was actually done about two years ago, but never released by the label for whatever reason.  Who knows how labels work, really?  Still, the plus side is that we get to give it away here, and for all heads, you know that means it's in the dark 2-step kind of style that Cosmin was pushing in his early days.  Loving it.   As the man himself says, out to all those discovering dubstep in 09!  If you had been discovering it in 07, this was the kind of thing you might have heard.

So anyway, give this download a blast.
