The New Sound of Bristol House Music - Western Union, Thursday
April 27
Even in the short time that I've been living down here, it's been interesting watching the changes in the underground dance music scene in Bristol. A while back, a typical Dubloaded night might see Jakes, Gemmy and Pinch putting it down; at the last one, two out of the three headliners played mostly 4/4 beats and the other was Pangaea - again, hardly your typical halfstepper. As well as people like Julio Bashmore coming through with a bass-heavy take on classic house sounds, and Kowton stripping things down to minimalistic (but NOT 'mnml') levels of slow-mo swagger, we've also seen Peverelist play sets full of classic Kerri Chandler at Boundary Object, and gear up to release records like this one from Andy Mac:
Then there's new blood like Hodge, who as part of Outboxx has just put out this slightly slower take on things on Kidkut's Immerse label, which itself used to be known more for a classic, restrained take on dubstep...
Then there's our very own I.D., who has been getting lots of love from all and sundry for his thoroughly enjoyable Slow House mixes - going all the way down to 100bpm for a grinding, waist-winding groove that can take in both Om Unit and Trickski...
So there's definitely something in the air, but up til now it's been just that - something in the air. That could all change though, with the launch of new night Western Union tomorrow night (Thursday April 28th) in the tiny - but super fun - basement of Take5 Cafe on Stokes Croft. Aimed as a focal point for this Bristol take on the world of house, particularly slower and bassier house, the first event sees Vessel, Asusu and the lovely Shanti on the tables, and there's plenty more planned on a monthly basis.
Perfect way to start yet another long weekend I'd say!
